MND and PIP: Complete Guide to Descriptors & Points

If you have MND, you may be entitled to PIP (Personal Independence Payment). This guide shows which PIP descriptors apply to your condition and how many points you could receive.

Which PIP Activities Does MND Affect?

Taking nutrition

  • Descriptor 2f: Cannot convey food and drink to their mouth and needs another person to do so — 10 points (e.g. paralysis, severe tremor)

Managing therapy or monitoring a health condition

  • Descriptor 3g: Needs supervision, prompting or assistance to manage therapy that takes more than 14 hours a week — 8 points (e.g. overnight ventilation monitoring, complex care regime)

Washing and bathing

  • Descriptor 4f: Cannot wash and bathe at all and needs another person to do so — 8 points (e.g. complete paralysis, severe ME)

Managing toilet needs or incontinence

  • Descriptor 5f: Needs assistance to manage both toilet needs and incontinence — 8 points (e.g. full care required)

Dressing and undressing

  • Descriptor 6f: Cannot dress or undress at all — 8 points (e.g. complete paralysis)

Moving around

  • Descriptor 12f: Cannot stand or move more than 1 metre even with aid — 12 points (e.g. wheelchair user, bedbound)
