Stroke and PIP: Complete Guide to Descriptors & Points

If you have Stroke, you may be entitled to PIP (Personal Independence Payment). This guide shows which PIP descriptors apply to your condition and how many points you could receive.

Which PIP Activities Does Stroke Affect?

Taking nutrition

  • Descriptor 2b: Needs an aid or appliance to take nutrition, or assistance to cut up food — 2 points (e.g. adapted cutlery, plate guard, help cutting meat)
  • Descriptor 2f: Cannot convey food and drink to their mouth and needs another person to do so — 10 points (e.g. paralysis, severe tremor)

Washing and bathing

  • Descriptor 4f: Cannot wash and bathe at all and needs another person to do so — 8 points (e.g. complete paralysis, severe ME)

Managing toilet needs or incontinence

  • Descriptor 5d: Needs assistance to manage toilet needs — 4 points (e.g. help with clothing, help with cleaning)

Dressing and undressing

  • Descriptor 6e: Needs assistance to dress or undress upper body — 3 points (e.g. cannot lift arms, weakness)
  • Descriptor 6f: Cannot dress or undress at all — 8 points (e.g. complete paralysis)

Communicating verbally

  • Descriptor 7b: Needs to use an aid or appliance to speak or hear — 2 points (e.g. hearing aid, speech device)

Moving around

  • Descriptor 12d: Can stand and move between 1 and 20 metres using an aid or appliance — 10 points (e.g. walking frame, crutches)

How to Claim PIP for Stroke
