PIP Assessment Preparation

Learn how assessors test you with hidden questions and observation techniques. Practice giving clear, consistent answers that accurately reflect your condition.

What to Expect at Your PIP Assessment

PIP assessments can be face-to-face, by phone, or by video. A health professional will ask you about how your condition affects 12 daily living and mobility activities. The assessment typically lasts 45–90 minutes.

Common Trick Questions to Watch For

  • “How did you get here today?” — They’re assessing your mobility. Even if someone drove you, explain the difficulties you had.
  • “What did you have for breakfast?” — They’re checking if you can prepare food. Don’t say “I made toast” without explaining the difficulties.
  • “Tell me about your hobbies” — They may use this against you. If you watch TV, explain you can’t concentrate for long.

Top Tips for Your Assessment

  • Always describe your worst days, not your best
  • Use specific examples: “Last Tuesday I couldn’t get dressed because...”
  • Apply the reliability test to every activity
  • Don’t minimise your difficulties — be honest about what you struggle with
  • Bring someone with you who can support your answers
